Course objectives
The aim of the course is to familiarize foreign students with the care of a woman and a pregnant woman in the Czech Republic during the whole pregnancy, childbirth and the puerperium, outline of community care in the Czech Republic.
Learning outcomes
The student knows the basic aspects of caring for a pregnant woman and a woman after childbirth in the Czech Republic, and can compare cultural differences between countries.
Syllabus
  • 1) Preventive examination of a woman in the Czech Republic (individual preventive examinations, content, insurance coverage)
  • 2) Competences of a midwife in the Czech Republic, professional organizations
  • 3) Care for a woman during pregnancy in the Czech Republic (prenatal examinations + their content)
  • 4) Prenatal diagnosis of congenital malformations (invasive and non-invasive methods)
  • 5) Care for a woman at the time of birth
  • 6) Care for a woman in puerperium
  • 7) Community care in midwifery in the Czech Republic
  • The course will include a visit to the Silesian Hospital in Opava, maternity ward, department of high-risk pregnant women’s department, puerperium department, gynecological outpatient clinic.

Assessment methods
Oral credit; elaboration and presentation of a PowerPoint presentation on the topic of midwives’ competences (in the given country); description of care for a woman during pregnancy, childbirth, and the puerperium, etc. + oral discussion - comparison of the field in the Czech Republic and in a specific country
