Course objectives
The course objective is to acquaint students with the application of pathology in practice; its importance in the diagnosis of biopsies, or when assessing the development of diseases, treatment success or prognosis. Pathology creates a theoretical basis for the study of further clinical disciplines. Having completed the course, students will be well versed in both general and special pathology (with an emphasis on the basic functions of the individual systems and the resulting failures and the most important diseased units, especially in connection with the oral cavity).
Learning outcomes
Professional Knowledge: Students can describe and explain the causes of diseases, their development, microscopic and macroscopic picture in relation to clinical manifestations, especially in connection with the oral cavity.
Professional Skills: Students can correctly identify and fixate biopsy material collected by a physician.
General Qualification: Understanding of findings, ability to navigate the issues, deriving context; independent, coherent, logical and technically correct expression, use of technical terminology.
Competences: Students can correctly identify and fixate biopsy material collected by a physician.
Syllabus
  • Lectures:
  • 1. Definition of pathology; application of pathology in practice, necropsy, biopsy, cytology.
  • 2. The disease and its causes. Termination of the organism, Regressive and metabolic changes.
  • 3. Inflammation, progressive changes.
  • 4. Tumors, hormonal disorders.
  • 5. Disorders of blood and lymph circulation.
  • 6. Introduction to the histological technique.
  • 7. Oral histology: Structure and function of tissues, general structure of the oral mucosa.
  • 8. Construction of the salivary glands.
  • 9. Construction of the tongue, lip, smell organ and taste.
  • 10. Waldeyer’s ring of lymphatic organs.
  • 11. Structure of the tooth and supporting apparatus.
  • 12. Development of the orofacial region. Tooth development. Congenital developmental malformations.
  • 13. Restructuring processes in the correction of abnormal tooth situation.
  • Training:
  • 1. Working with microscope.
  • 2. Biopsy, necropsy and cytology lab (demonstration).
  • 3. Excursion to the department of pathological anatomy.

Credit requirements: 80% attendance at the training (students who could not attend compulsory instruction for serious reasons will be assigned an alternative way of fulfilling their study requirements).
