Course objectives
The course combines theoretical and practical lessons. It provides an overview of modern applied management in health care with an emphasis on human resource development, managerial skills, and strategic management methods/techniques in health care, including practical implementation. Special attention is paid to current trends in quality management in health care and evaluation of quality of health care.
Syllabus
  • Lectures:
    1. Introduction to management - conceptions of management, applied management (health care, nursing), levels of management, core structure of management skills. Leadership. Management. Manager profile - management skills.
    2. Functions of management, systems approach in management. Leadership and following. Corporate culture in health care. Functions of leadership, power. Controlling.
    3. Decision making and problem solving. Managerial decision making. Methods and techniques in strategic management - SWOT analysis, PEST, force field, Delphi technique. Project management.
    4. Ethical and legal issues, ethics of decision making in management.
    5. Health care organizations, description and orientation in the organizational structure. Organization - organigrams, interactions and communication in organizations.
    6. Human resources (HR) management I - basic tasks of HR management, staffing and recruitment, discrimination in recruitment. Personnel management. Power, politics and influences.
    7. Resource management. Information management, IT and the human-IT interface.
    8. Communication in management, negotiations. Introduction to managed care and its tools.
    9. Strategies, methods and forms of nursing care provision. Planning and scheduling of nursing staff, ward management.
    10. Human resources management II - development and evaluation of employees, formation of vacancies and job opportunities, supervision, mentoring, coaching.
    11. Internal and external factors influencing contemporary nursing. Sustainability.
    12. Planning - vision, strategies and goals, marketing (marketing mix, advertising in health care). Change management, reengineering, resistance to change, strategies reducing resistance to change. Benchmarking.
    13. Team building through communication and partnership. Team work - responsibility, autonomy, authority, leadership and power, advocacy, collective bargaining. Professional role of nurses as patient advocates.
    14. Quality management. Risk management and emergency management.
    15. Interpersonal and personal skills. Consumer - client - patient/community. Conflict and conflict resolution. Delegating power in professional practice. Fulfillment and role-taking.
    16. Self-management: stress and time management. Career management: perception of opportunities.
    17. Lifelong learning for employees, philosophy of a learning organization.

    2. Quality management - designing standards, planning an audit.
    3. Risk management and emergency management - identification of risks, FMEA analysis, implementation into provisions.
