Course objectives
The aim of the course is to acquaint students with specific clinical statuses and diseases in fields of surgery. The course describes symptoms and treatments for specific surgical statuses and explains basics and procedures of comprehensive nursing care of specific surgical diseases. Having finished the course, the students will orientate themselves in the issues of surgical nursing; they will be able to provide adequate nursing care of specific clinical statuses. Learning outcomes: Professional knowledge: The students can characterize symptoms and treatments for specific surgical diseases (e.g. stomach, duodenum and pancreas diseases). They can define specifics of surgical interventions and postoperative care. Professional skills: The students are able to plan and provide care of specific clinical surgical statuses by the method of the nursing care. General ability: The students can compile a nursing anamnesis, diagnose nursing problems and plan care as well as assess the expected results in the change to patients' medical conditions independently. Competence: The students shall verify, enhance and deepen the acquired ability to work by the method of the nursing process with patients suffering form surgical diseases.
Syllabus
  • Lectures:
    1. Introduction to surgery. History of surgery. Overview of general surgery. Asepsis and antisepsis. Disinfection and sterilization. Conditions requiring surgical interventions. Categories of surgical interventions. Exigencies of surgical interventions and hazards of them. First aid. Preoperative preparation and postoperative care. Postoperative complications. Wounds in surgery. Prevention of nosocominal (hospital) infections. Shock. Types of shock. Principles of therapy.
    2. Acute abdomen: clinical statuses, examination methods, special pre-operative preparation; positions of a patient during the operation; aesthesis; surgical interventions; hazards and complications during the operation and after it.
    3. Abdominal wall surgery: clinical statuses, examination methods, special pre-operative preparation; positions of a patient during the operation; aesthesis; surgical interventions; hazards and complications during the operation and after it. Hernia.
    4. Oesophagus surgery: clinical statuses, examination methods, special pre-operative preparation; positions of a patient during the operation; aesthesis; surgical interventions; risks and complications during the operation and after it.
    5. Stomach and duodenum surgery: clinical statuses, examination methods, special pre-operative preparation; positions of a patient during the operation; aesthesis; surgical interventions; risks and complications during the operation and after it.
    6. Para-alimentary organs surgery - surgical diseases of the liver: clinical statuses, examination methods, special pre-operative preparation; positions of a patient during the operation; aesthesis; surgical interventions; risks and complications during the operation and after it.

    10. Surgery of the rectum: clinical statuses, examination methods, special pre-operative preparation; positions of a patient during the operation; aesthesis; surgical interventions; risks and complications during the operation and after it.

    Seminars a practical sessions:
    1. Nursing care in surgery. Nursing assessment of a surgical patient. Identification of the current and potential perioperational problems. Formulation of nursing diagnoses. Determination of the nursing care plan.
    2. Nursing process in pre-operative, intra-operative and post-operative periods.
    3. Care of wounds. Acute traumatic wounds, post-operative wounds, septic wounds, aseptic wounds.
    4. Nursing process for a patient suffering from an acute abdomen (ileus, peritonitis, appendicitis).
    5. Nursing process for a patient suffering from hernia.
    6. Nursing process for a patient suffering from a surgical disease of the oesophagus, stomach and duodenum.
    7. Nursing process for a patient suffering from a surgical disease of the liver.
    8. Nursing process for a patient suffering from a surgical disease of the gall bladder and biliary tract.
