Course objectives
The course combines theoretical and practical lessons. It provides an overview of modern applied management in health care with an emphasis on human resource development, managerial skills, and strategic management methods/techniques in health care, including practical implementation. Special attention is paid to current trends in quality management in health care and evaluation of quality of health care. Learning outcomes: Professional knowledge: The student is able to explain the functions of management and their significance for workplace operations, to describe decision-making processes and strategies, to summarize ethical principles governing health care, decision making, research and the use of creative products of other professionals, to explain communication strategies related to patients, colleagues, superiors, suppliers etc., to describe the processes of quality implementation and enhancement in organizations, to describe the implementation of risk management in organizational processes. Professional skills: On completion of the course the student is prepared to effectively communicate and co-operate in a health care team, to efficiently manage the nursing team in shifts and to follow established standards, to prioritize nursing care, to design plans effectively based on defined criteria, to delegate and evaluate outcomes of nursing care and make appropriate adjustments, to actively foster patient comfort and safety for all people in the working environment (including self). As a member of a multidisciplinary team, the student will be able to solve practical issues in their profession at the operational level of management and to employ quality of care assessment tools. They will be able to provide information and arguments and to implement information technology for everyday purposes. They will be able to provide basic support to probationers (student nurses) in clinical placements. General ability: The student is able to plan, organize, manage, control, make decisions and evaluate nursing care provided by themselves and the health care team, including prioritization. The student is able to participate in quality enhancement and facilitation of safe care. They are able to meaningfully support patients and their relatives, as well as student nurses. They are capable of acting in complex, demanding and challenging situations, of managing human resources and adequately addressing complaints filed by care users. Competence: According to Act No. 55/2011 Coll., Section 3, nurse graduate performs the following within the scope of their professional competence: a) provides defined health care in compliance with law and current standards, b) maintains patient records and other reports resulting from other acts of law, c) handles the information system used in the health care facility, d) provides information to the patient in accord with professional competence, or relates doctor´s instructions to the patient, e) participates in practical training of students in study programs designed to achieve the legal ability to pursue a health profession, f) participates in the preparation of standards. In the domain of management and decision making, the graduate is able to prioritize working tasks, co-operate in a health care team and foster its efficiency, work as a partner, set priorities for others and manage their work, demonstrate management skills, be a role model in nursing, demonstrate flexibility, initiative and creativity, introduce enhancements in clinical practice, act responsibly and resolve challenging situations, provide arguments for their decisions, implement concrete care of the client/patient, appropriately address complaints, learn and educate less experienced colleagues, manage human and other resources efficiently, follow and support personal, professional and organizational standards.

  • Lectures:
    1. Introduction to management - conceptions of management, applied management (health care, nursing), levels of management, core structure of management skills. Leadership. Management. Manager profile - management skills.
    2. Functions of management, systems approach in management. Leadership and following. Corporate culture in health care. Functions of leadership, power. Controlling.
    3. Decision making and problem solving. Managerial decision making. Methods and techniques in strategic management - SWOT analysis, PEST, force field, Delphi technique. Project management.
    4. Ethical and legal issues, ethics of decision making in management.
    5. Health care organizations, description and orientation in the organizational structure. Organization - organigrams, interactions and communication in organizations.
    6. Human resources (HR) management I - basic tasks of HR management, staffing and recruitment, discrimination in recruitment. Personnel management. Power, politics and influences.
    7. Resource management. Information management, IT and the human-IT interface.
    8. Communication in management, negotiations. Introduction to managed care and its tools.
    9. Strategies, methods and forms of nursing care provision. Planning and scheduling of nursing staff, ward management.
    10. Human resources management II - development and evaluation of employees, formation of vacancies and job opportunities, supervision, mentoring, coaching.
    11. Internal and external factors influencing contemporary nursing. Sustainability.
    12. Planning - vision, strategies and goals, marketing (marketing mix, advertising in health care). Change management, reengineering, resistance to change, strategies reducing resistance to change. Benchmarking.
    13. Team building through communication and partnership. Team work - responsibility, autonomy, authority, leadership and power, advocacy, collective bargaining. Professional role of nurses as patient advocates.
    14. Quality management. Risk management and emergency management.
    15. Interpersonal and personal skills. Consumer - client - patient/community. Conflict and conflict resolution. Delegating power in professional practice. Fulfillment and role-taking.
    16. Self-management: stress and time management. Career management: perception of opportunities.
    17. Lifelong learning for employees, philosophy of a learning organization.
