Course objectives
The course is designed as theoretical-practical complex. It extends medical knowledge needed for clinical nursing. Emphasis is put on preventive care for sight and on prevention of serious sight impairment. Furthermore, it familiarizes with clinical conditions and differences of multidisciplinary care for patients and persons with sight handicap within secondary and tertiary health care.
Syllabus
  • 1. Definition of ophthalmology, contents of its activities and specialization of the discipline, current trends.
    2. Most frequent diseases in ophthalmology and their therapy.
    3. Operations in ophthalmology, pre-operation preparation and post-operation care.
    4. Basic examination methods in ophthalmology and current instrumentation (ARC, intraocular pressure, ophthalmoscopy, examination at slit lamp, examination lenses, fundus examination - OCT/FP/FA, etc.).
    5. Acute and urgent conditions in ophthalmology - classification and first aid.
    6. Nursing procedures in ophthalmology (sight sharpness examination - corrected sight sharpness / uncorrected sight sharpness, visus, colour sense, eye rinsing, eye covering, child immobilization, eye hygiene, eyelid eversion, eye smears, specific aspects of child examination).
    7. Application of drugs in ophthalmology, nursing process (drops, ointments, preparation of patient for AM examination, diagnostics and tests, e.g. TBUT, Seidel test, cornea colouring).

Teacher's information
The contact instruction is implemented through the system of tutorials on selected topics. The combined part of the studies is implemented in the e-learning course environment at e-portal http://elearning.fvp.slu.cz/. The students have study supports including correspondence tasks available for instruction there. The course is concluded by a credit in written or oral form; within it, the student will demonstrate knowledge of basic and recommended reading and be able to discuss the processed correspondence tasks. The student will have opportunity to consult individually the topics studied, through individual or group tutorials or electronic mail.
Credit requirements: 80% attendance to seminars (the teacher will specify substitutive way of fulfilment of study duties to students who could not attend compulsory lessons for serious reasons).
Credit test (cut-off score: 80%).
