Course objectives
The instructor/lecturer will provide students with basic knowledge on the issue of persons with hearing impairment and describe the communication systems of people with hearing impairment in the Czech Republic, which will lead to the students’ better understanding of the deaf culture. They introduce the basic terminology, legislative measures and explain the significant differences in the communication needs of people with hearing disabilities. Part of the course is direct communication in the Czech sign language. Students will learn basic hand positions to learn individual characters, will gradually develop their own character lexicon.
Learning outcomes
Professional Knowledge:
- Students are familiar with the problems of people with hearing impairments.
- Students know the theory related to the topic of communication systems of people with hearing impairments.
- Students understand the basic terminology and legislative measures.
- Students are familiar with the differences and needs of people with hearing impairments.

Professional Skills:
- Students can use basic hand positions, within the realm of individual characters from ordinary life.
- Students can use the signs of the recommended character lexicon.
- Students can use classifiers and specific signs.
- Students can reflect on and apply the work of the whole body, associated with visual-motion means of communication.

General qualification:
- Students can communicate independently within a given character lexicon.
- Students can apply a character lexicon in everyday communication, conversation and storytelling.

  • 1. Introduction to the study, basic concepts.
  • 2. Typology of persons with hearing disabilities.
  • 3. Communication systems of hearing-impaired persons.
  • 4. Character positions, first signs, two-handed finger alphabet sign language vs. spoken language, gesture vs. character.
  • 5. Manual and non-manual components of a character.
  • 6. – 10. Key vocabulary, nouns, verbs.
  • 11. Principles of communication with hearing impaired persons.
  • 12. Social services for people with hearing impairments, excursions.

Study Materials
The course can also be completed outside the examination period.
Teacher's information
Personal contact during instruction, consultation hours. During their studies, students use the study material to elaborate selected correspondence assignments. At the same time, students demonstrate knowledge of compulsory literature and of the in-person lectures. Students will be able to continuously consult the topics studied individually via e-mail, or in individual or team consultations upon request. The course has an LMS course which is used for electronic communication with the instructor and among students.
