Course objectives
The subject aims at providing introductory knowledge in radiology and related disciplines. It focuses on radiodiagnostics, radiation therapy and nuclear medicine, including related nursing care and radiation protection. An overview of radio diagnostic methods is provided (traditional and leading edge examination methods), ultrasound and magnetic resonance. The subject discusses basic imaging methods, beginning with traditional skiagraphy a skiascopy, on to CT, ultrasound, magnetic resonance, radiation therapy and nuclear medicine procedures. Further, radiation sickness is described, including its forms and possible protection. On completion of the course, the student will be orientated in the appropriate use of radiologic methods in imaging of particular tissues and in the therapeutic opportunities of ionizing radiation.
Syllabus
  • 1. X-rays - sources, properties, primary and secondary radiation
    2. Biological impact of ionizing radiation, principles of radiation protection
    3. Basic radiologic imaging methods - indications, preparation for examination
    4. Special X-ray imaging methods, including bone densitometry and mammography, screening in mammography
    5. Contrast media - adverse effects of contrast media (especially iodine-based). Prevention and treatment of allergic reaction
    6. Digital subtraction angiography (DSA) - indications, pre-examination preparation and post-examination, instrumentarium
    7. Computerized tomography (CT) - principles, indications, preparation for examination
    8. Ultrasound - principles, indications, preparation for examination
    9. Magnetic resonance - principles, indications and contraindications, preparation for examination
    10. Nuclear medicine - basic techniques and methods, application
    11. Digital radiology, archiving of images, PACS
    12. Specifics of X-ray examination in paediatric patients
