Course objectives

The course objectives are to deepen the knowledge of grammatical rules, develop communication skills in English (written and spoken), to acquaint students with the position of the English language in general and specialized communications and with basic medical terminology.
The course includes practising all basic language skills (Reading, Listening, Speaking, Writing, Translation) with an emphasis on understanding professional texts and the ability to communicate in situations specific to the healthcare professions (interview with the patient, understanding, documentation and technical resources). Having completed the course, students will be well versed in medical terms (including anatomical nomenclature and its Latin roots), key grammatical means of communication and selected facts about the healthcare of English-speaking countries.

Learning outcomes

Professional Knowledge: Students can characterize the English language from a linguistic and social point of view, to define the basic language layers, describe basic grammatical rules, name and actively explain key notions in specific thematic areas. They can integrate the acquired vocabulary in context.
Professional Skills: Students can engage in general and professional communication in English in spoken and written language. They can understand a simple professional text and translate it adequately. General Qualification: Students acquire and produce verbally coded information in a variety of professional and extra-professional communication situations.
Competences: Students can communicate effectively in English, understand professional texts at a basic level of complexity, formulate ideas effectively in English in spoken and written form in general and in specialized medical topics.

Syllabus

• 1. Characteristics of the English language and its position in the world. Professional communication and terminology. Initial diagnosis of language knowledge level. 2. Introduction to medical terminology 1 - Introduction, terminology, health and disease. Nosology. Gathering medical history of an English speaking patient. 3. Introduction to medical terminology 2 - hospital and its parts, medical facilities (comparison between the Czech Republic and abroad). 4. Introduction to medical terminology 3 - medical profession, nurse’s work, fields and specializations. 5. Introduction to medical terminology 4 - the human body (external anatomy). Understanding a package insert. 6. Introduction to medical terminology 5 - the human body (internal anatomy, physiology). Communication during basic physical examination and nursing diagnostics.

Assessment methods

Fulfill 90% instruction attendance, presentation of language topic before class and completion of a written test as a condition of awarding credit.
Written test:
Vocabulary test, applied grammar and translation - open and closed questions / tasks, timeout 45 min, 75% success rate. Students will complete the course in writing in a classroom setting. Ongoing evaluation takes place at training / seminars - student activity, presentation of formal and substantive requirements (factual accuracy, interactivity, list of sources).
Passing a credit test.
