Course objectives
The course objective is to introduce students to Latin grammar, basic terminology of medical disciplines and basic technical terminology of dentistry and related disciplines, which are essential for the study of other vocational courses.
Learning outcomes
Professional Knowledge: Students can explain the basics of Latin grammar, know the basic professional Latin terminology in the field of dentistry and is well versed in greek equivalents in the field of dentistry.
Professional Skills: Students can appropriately use professional Latin terminology both in speech and writing, they can translate a professional text.
General Qualification: Understanding of the rules of Latin grammar and use of professional Latin terminology in the context of theoretical instruction and practice. Ability to understand the specialized terminology in Latin and to apply Greek equivalents in specialized texts.
Competences: Use of Latin and Greek terminology with understanding in the context of theoretical instruction and practice. Students can improve their knowledge constantly during their study.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction to Latin, phonetics, morphology, prepositions. Pronunciation, stress, duration.
  • 2. Nouns of the 1st and 2nd declination.
  • 3. Adjectives of the 1st and 2nd declination.
  • 4. Verbs, I - IV. conjugation.
  • 5. Nouns of the 3rd declension, varying and identical stem syllable. Nouns of the 3rd declension - supplement, vocational terminology focusing on dentistry and dental hygiene.
  • 6. Repeating the 3rd declension - highlighting exceptions to this declension.
  • 7. Knowledge of vocabulary, specialized terminology in Latin and Greek.
  • 8. Anatomic terminology and nomenclature.
  • 9. Adjectives of the 3rd declension - one-termination, two-termination, three-termination adjectives.
  • 10. Greek nouns of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd declension.
  • 11. Grading of adjectives - exceptions, irregular and incomplete gradation.
  • 12. Adverbs.
  • 13. Overview of numerals - the use of Latin terminology in the field of dentistry. Latin and Greek prefixes, suffixes, compound words. Diagnosis, basic recipes. Full articles in the field of dentistry.

Assessment methods
Credit requirements: 80% attendance at the seminars (students who could not attend compulsory instruction for serious reasons will be assigned an alternative way of fulfilling their study requirements).
Passing a credit test requires 80% success rate.
Test on specialist Latin terminology, applied grammar and translation.
