Course objectives
* Introduce students to the role of volunteering in various areas of public interest (social services, healthcare, education, youth work). * Prepare students for engaging in volunteer activities with an emphasis on responsibility, boundaries, and communication. * Deepen understanding of the specifics of working with different target groups. * Provide personal contact with practice through excursions and meetings with volunteer coordinators.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student will be able to: •navigate the types and specific characteristics of volunteer activities. •understand the basics of working and communicating with different target groups. •recognize ethical dilemmas and the limits of the volunteer role. •independently engage in volunteer work in a specific area. •reflect on their experience and articulate personal development.
Syllabus
1. Introduction to Volunteering – motivation, types of volunteer activities, legislation, ethics 2. The Role of the Volunteer – boundaries, responsibility, rights and obligations 3. Basics of Communication – active listening, empathy, nonverbal communication 4. Safe Contact with Target Groups – children, seniors, people with disabilities, people experiencing homelessness 5. Volunteering in Social Services – organizational needs, opportunities for involvement 6. Volunteering in Healthcare – supplementary support for patients and their families 7. Volunteering in Education and Youth Work – tutoring, leisure activities, mentoring 8. Volunteer Coordinator – their role, challenges, and practical experience 9. Volunteering in Crisis and Humanitarian Areas – food banks, collections, community assistance 10.Basics of Reflecting on the Volunteer Experience – processing experiences, risk of burnout, volunteer support
