Course objectives
The aim of the course is to provide students with an opportunity to become familiar with the specific issues of practical work with seniors in residential facilities, facilities for seniors with disabilities, or in geriatric or gerontopsychiatric institutions. The course enables students to acquire and practise skills, connecting theoretical knowledge with the ability to address practical problems concerning the target group of seniors. The purpose of the course is to develop the ability to navigate the organisational structure and functioning of the given facility, to identify sources of cooperation within the broader field of professional practice, to recognise the needs and living conditions of clients, and, in this context, to create conditions for the educational activities of clients along with their subsequent implementation.
Learning outcomes
Field-specific knowledge: The student will acquire knowledge of working with seniors in an institutional setting and, through observation, will learn the basics of working with the target group, with a focus on educational activities. Field-specific skills: The student will be able to apply theoretical knowledge in practice, design educational activities for seniors, and implement them under the professional supervision of the facility’s staff. General competencies: The student will be able to independently evaluate the effectiveness of educational activities for seniors and apply theoretical knowledge in practice.
Syllabus
Course Outline (EN) The professional practice will be carried out on an ongoing basis (for part-time students according to their time availability and the possibilities of the facility, it may also be organised in blocks) in the scope of 104 hours per semester in a selected facility. During the course, students will participate in supervision seminars. As part of the practice, the student will obtain information concerning the mission of the institution, its history, the composition of the client group, organisational structure, staffing, links to other facilities and the local community, relevant legislation, and other aspects. Key information will be considered that which relates to the student’s professional activities directly connected to educational activities with clients. During the practice, the student will complete six days of observation activities, including educational activities, and conduct ten own educational sessions according to the needs of the respective senior group. Educational sessions will be consulted with the relevant facility staff member (supervisor) and subsequently implemented under their professional guidance. Observation activities are recorded in observation sheets (provided to the student as part of the practice materials prior to commencement). Educational sessions and observation activities will be documented in the practice diary according to the structure specified by the relevant document. The student will prepare a practice diary based on their professional placement. The structure of the diary is set by the course lecturer. Educational sessions will be prepared according to the methodological structure provided. A necessary condition is the actual implementation of the sessions. The practice diary will also include the student’s evaluation of the practice and the facility’s evaluation of the student’s performance.
