- Course objectives
- The goal is to familiarize students with the theory and practice of crisis management as a comprehensive body of knowledge, approaches, tools, and experience. The course content builds on the theoretical foundations of management, strategic management, and business economics. It covers the definition of basic concepts, the development and current understanding of crisis management, the principles of crisis management and crisis planning—which must respond to the various phases of a crisis—and the relevant legal framework. Students should acquire knowledge regarding the application of crisis management theory in both business practice and the public administration and non-business sectors.
- Learning outcomes
- The student can explain the difference between a crisis and a risk; can explain the impacts of a crisis on an organization; can specify the course of a crisis and describe its individual phases; can explain the nature and importance of an early warning system for an organization in crisis prevention; can conduct an economic analysis of a crisis within an organization; can explain the importance and nature of crisis management; can describe the activities of crisis management stakeholders within organizations; can formulate a crisis strategy for specific situations facing an organization; can develop a crisis scenario and a crisis plan; can propose appropriate crisis communication to manage a crisis situation within an organization; can specify crisis management in small and medium-sized enterprises; can explain the nature and specifics of crisis management in an international context; can explain the nature and specifics of crisis management in public administration; can explain the nature of risk and risk management; can describe the individual phases of the risk management process within an organization; and can apply selected risk management methods in the identification and analysis of risk.
- Syllabus
- 1. Crisis and Risk. The nature and definition of the terms “crisis” and “risk.” Typology of risks. Risk management, its roles, and its place in organizational management. Typology of crises. The significance and impact of crises on organizations. Crises and their progression.
2. Early warning systems in crisis management. Early warning systems in crisis management and their significance. Methods for implementing early warning systems in organizations. Economic diagnosis of a crisis in an organization.
3. Crisis Management. The nature and significance of crisis management. The role and implementation of crisis management in organizations. Crisis management activities. The role of the crisis manager. Interim manager. Requirements for a crisis manager.
4. Strategic crisis management. Strategic crisis management in an organization. Strategic crisis plans and scenarios. The importance of strategic crisis management for managing a crisis in an organization. Crisis strategies and their typology.
5. Crisis Communication in organizations. The importance and essence of crisis communication in organizations. Key communication challenges during a crisis in an organization. Approaches to managing crisis communication during a crisis in an organization.
6. Crisis Management in Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises. Ensuring crisis management in small and medium-sized enterprises. Specifics of crisis management in small and medium-sized enterprises. Specifics of international crisis management.
