Course objectives (in Czech)
This course surveys the state of the art in environmental economics and policy. If begins with a review of historical and philosophical foundations of environmental economics and policy. This will lay a firm ground for understanding cost-effective measures to prevent and mitigate environmental problems. Particular emphasis is given to contrasting command and control approaches with economic instruments such as eco-taxes and tradable pollution permits. The course incorporates insights from several natural and social sciences, but its main focus is on the applied analysis of economics and policy. The course consists of lectures, case discussions, and student presentations. While much of the literature in the field of environmental economics and policy originates in the West, particularly in the United States, careful attention will be paid to translate and adapt this knowledge to the economic, political and cultural context of Central and Eastern Europe.
