- Learning outcomes
- The student will be able to distinguish between foreign and international trade activities and analyse their significance in a global context; explain the stages of trade operations and determine the suitability of a particular operation for a given type of trade; propose a retail internationalisation method based on an analysis of the target market; plan a trade transaction with a view to minimising its environmental footprint and specify methods for measuring sustainability; assess the environmental aspects of a product in accordance with cradle-to-cradle design principles; explain the importance of Incoterms, payment terms, receivables management and pricing policy in international trade; calculate the price of a product in the target market and conduct price research; distinguish between the dimensions and instruments of trade policy and assess their impact on trade operations; describe the customs clearance process, identify customs procedures and assess the risks associated with carrying out a trade operation; select an appropriate mode of transport based on the type of goods, costs, delivery time and environmental impact; and specify the prerequisites and identify the key barriers to international e-commerce.
- Syllabus
- 1. Foundations of International Trade Operations
Foundations and functions of foreign trade. Definition of international trade operations and distinctions between domestic, foreign and international trade environments. Types of contracts and documents used in international trade. The current political and legal position of the Czech Republic in external economic relations. Approaches to the classification of trade methods. Factors influencing the choice of entry mode into international markets. Characteristics of individual trade methods.
2. Implementation of Trade Operations and Delivery Terms
The stages of trade operations, including preparation and planning for entry into a selected market. Contracts concluded in international trade as part of commercial negotiations. Documents used in international trade. Application of the different groups of Incoterms rules in trade operations. Content of delivery clauses. Factors influencing the choice of an appropriate clause. Characteristics of international trade organisations.
3. Payment Terms and International Trade Finance
Functions and content of payment terms. Types of payment terms. Parties involved in financing international trade. Financing methods and instruments. Specific aspects of receivables management in international markets.
4. Pricing and Price Calculation in International Trade
Principles of pricing in foreign markets. Price calculation in foreign trade. Types of price calculations and calculation formulae. Price research. Purchasing power levels in selected countries.
5. Specific Aspects of Intra-EU Transactions in International Trade
The EU Common Commercial Policy and other coordinated policies affecting trade. Intra-EU supply and acquisition of goods. Supply and acquisition of goods outside the EU. Technical harmonisation in EU countries. Carousel trading transactions.
6. Procedural Aspects of International Transport and Customs Operations
The importance of logistics in international trade. Modes of transport. Options for using warehousing services. The customs clearance process. Customs tariffs. The EU Integrated Tariff system (TARIC). The importance of the origin of goods. Customs procedures.
7. Risks and Risk Mitigation in International Trade
Risks associated with international trade operations. Classification of risks. Risk management in international trade. Risk mitigation instruments. The economic significance and legal framework of risk insurance. Types of insurance against risks in international trade.
8. Electronic Movement of Goods in an International Context
Basic concepts and definitions. Business models. Digitalisation of logistics processes. Electronic customs clearance and reporting associated with international trade operations. Modern approaches to distribution channel management. - Literature

- Working with texts, teamwork, brainstorming, cooperative and collaborative learning, case-study-based teaching, learning matrices, and group argumentation.

- Student requirements: Attendance at seminars (minimum attendance of 50%).
Assessment methods: A semester project focusing on the conditions for conducting trade operations in a selected country, including its presentation (30% of the final grade); completion of exercises and case studies (10%); and a final written examination (60%). - Language of instruction
