Degree programme objectives

The three-year, professionally oriented Bachelor's degree programme aims to prepare students for real-life practice in management and organisation, ensuring activities in civil society, especially in non-profit organisations and social enterprises. The programme emphasises the employment of graduates in the labour market within organisations that focus on the philosophy of the 'triple bottom line' (social, economic and environmental benefits for society). Graduates will also have knowledge of economics, business and other related fields, such as management and the specifics of non-profit organisations, and will be able to work in lower and middle management positions. The knowledge and skills acquired through professional training will enable graduates to implement their own social entrepreneurial plans or work with various groups (communities) in the civil sector, including disadvantaged groups in the labour market such as women, young people without experience, migrants and minorities.

The main objective of the study can be divided into three sub-objectives: (SO1) acquiring professional competencies in the management and operation of civil society organisations, including institutionalisation of the sector, establishment of organisations and application of formal approaches; (SO2) actively supporting the development of soft skills and experience through cooperation with field experts; and (SO3) supporting mutual experiential learning and networking between teachers and students, where the value lies in co-learning based on professional practice or volunteer projects. DC1 is fulfilled by the professional knowledge, skills and competencies of the programme's graduates, while DC2 and DC3 are fulfilled by the study plan itself. This was developed through close cooperation between teaching staff and experts in the field, based on the results of roundtable discussions and long-term collaboration.

  • Rules and Conditions for the Creation of a Study Plan

The study program is fully based on the ECTS credit system, where one ECTS credit equals 25 hours. The entire program thus corresponds to 4,500 hours. The standard length of a teaching hour is 45 minutes. During the entire program, students earn a total of 180 credits.

During their studies, students complete a total of 24 compulsory subjects, representing 142 ECTS credits. Within the category of compulsory subjects, seven subjects are designed as basic theoretical subjects (Fundamentals of Microeconomics for Practice, Business Economics, Finance in Business, Fundamentals of Macroeconomics for Practice, Corporate Social Responsibility, Non-profit Sector and Public Administration, Management of Contribution Organizations, Social Entrepreneurship). Another 7 compulsory subjects fall into the category of core subjects. The remaining compulsory subjects cover basic economic and management disciplines, the completion of which completes the standard graduate of the economics program.

Within the compulsory elective subjects, students can choose from 8 subjects, with the requirement to obtain 25 credits. This means successfully completing 5 subjects. As part of the compulsory elective subjects, students also have the option of taking a subject in a foreign language (Entrepreneurship). For such a subject, all communication, including exams and the fulfillment of all study obligations, takes place in English. Among other things, this allows students to demonstrate their ability to actively communicate in a global language and supports their employability in the field.

A total of 14 ECTS credits are reserved for elective subjects in the study plan. Students can choose from all bachelor's degree subjects offered at the faculty. This allows students to specialize to a lesser extent in another discipline (e.g., accounting, marketing, information technology, etc.) in addition to their study program. Students can also fulfill the credit requirements for elective courses with credits earned during a study abroad program or by participating in real-world business projects through the Business Gate Academy and other programs.

  • Access to Further Studies

The practical skills acquired in this way do not prevent graduates from continuing their studies with a high degree of independence in follow-up master's programs in suitable study programs. Within the Economics and Management program, students have the opportunity to take advantage of suitable specializations (especially the Entrepreneurship specialization), the Sustainable Business program, or the Public Economics and Administration program, which expands the employment opportunities for graduates of the Social Management program. Subsequently, graduates of follow-up master's programs can advance to doctoral studies in the Economics and Management study program, which is accredited at SU OPF.
