Abstract
Homeland is a space characterized by belonging. For the Klepfisz family and thousands of other Jews, it used to be the flowering Jewish culture of pre-war Poland. This home was, however, irretrievably lost. The present paper analyses Klepfisz’s strategies of searching for a safe space by blending of the European past with the American present. She tells stories that capture the lives and struggles of women both in (pre)war Poland and contemporary America, connecting the narrated events and fates by emotions they evoke. The paper discusses the poet’s search for metaphorical home and the role of the Yiddish language and culture.
