V originále

introduces the, originally zoological, concept of active submission into literary studies, exploring its potential to serve as a defense mechanism against various forms of violence. For the purposes of literary analysis, its meaning and functions shall be reinterpreted and extended, proposing a broader understanding of active submission, not only as a term denoting social behavior in animals, but encompassing a conscious response to violence, and, more specifically for the purpose of this study, gender-based vio- lence against women migrants as presented in Amy Bloom’s histor- ical novel Away (2007).
