This paper examines how Marissa Meyer’s Cinder and Kalynn Bayron’s Cinderella Is Dead rewrite the traditional Cinderella story to challenge gender roles and the so-called Cinderella complex. Meyer presents a futuristic, self-sufficient heroine who reclaims free will in a world that devalues her. Meanwhile, Bayron offers a bold critique of heteronormativity and patriarchal control through a queer Black protagonist who actively resists oppressive systems. Both novels reject the idea that a woman’s worth lies in beauty or marriage, and instead promote autonomy, empowerment, and resistance for young adult readers.
