This lecture explores how František Palacký’s interpretation of medieval Czech history shaped the foundations of national identity and continues to influence political narratives and popular culture. Special attention will be given to the image of the Hussite movement—its appropriation by the communist regime and its representation in film and other cultural forms. Finally, the talk will examine how these historical myths are reactivated in today’s public discourse and populist politics, revealing the enduring power of the past in shaping modern identities.

Tato přednáška zkoumá, jak interpretace středověkých českých dějin Františkem Palackým formovala základy národní identity a nadále ovlivňuje politické narativy a populární kulturu. Zvláštní pozornost bude věnována obrazu husitského hnutí – jeho apropriaci komunistickým režimem a jeho reprezentaci ve filmu a dalších kulturních formách. Nakonec se přednáška zaměří na to, jak se tyto historické mýty znovu aktivují v dnešním veřejném diskurzu a populistické politice, a odhalí tak trvalou sílu minulosti při formování moderních identit.
