Research background: The current emphasis in many regions remains on managing the waste after it is generated, rather than focusing on its reduction at the source. This paper builds on this approach by examining the development of waste generation across Czech regions and assessing whether the national goals of reducing waste generation are being reflected at the regional level. Purpose of the article: The purpose of this study is to analyse and compare waste gen- eration trends and intensities across the regions of the Czech Republic. By focusing on total waste generation rather than solely on waste treatment practices, the study aims to identify the regional disparities. Methods: The comparison is based on the publicly available data about waste generation in the Czech regions between years 2017–2022. Indicators like waste generation index and indicators of waste generation intensity were computed and are presented to assess the regional differences in the waste generation. Findings & Value added: The results reveal significant disparities influenced by popula- tion density, economic activity, and waste management efficiency. It highlights the need for targeted policies and circular economy initiatives to address high waste intensity in industrial areas and calls for further research on policy effectiveness in achieving sustainable waste reduction.
