Course objectives
The course focuses on systematic development of the students` language competence and on practical application of advanced English communication skills. Students prepare their own presentations on current topics and they discuss them. This way they learn to deal with difficult situations where problems need to be solved, to argue and ask other students specific questions. The entry level is C1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. The aim is enlarging the students` vocabulary and improvement in language interaction and strategies of language reception and production. Current material from the mass media of the English-speaking countries serves the students as a means of deepening their understanding of various issues and improving their speaking skills.
Learning outcomes
The students will learn to deal with difficult situations where problems need to be solved, to argue and ask other students specific questions. will enlarge their vocabulary and grammar skills
Syllabus
  • 1. Tenses: Present continuous and present simple / Past continuous and past simple; Vocabulary study: academic work
  • 2. Tenses: Past perfect and past simple / Past simple and present perfect; Vocabulary study: types of idiom
  • 3. Tenses: Past continuous and past simple / Present perfect continuous and present perfect; Vocabulary study: people and relationships
  • 4. Present and past time: Review; Vocabulary study: idioms (character and behaviour, relationships)
  • 5. The Future. Will and be going to / Be to + infinitive, be about to + infinitive; Vocabulary study: leisure
  • 6. The Future: Future continuous and future perfect (continuous) / Present simple and present continuous for the future
  • 7. The Future: Other ways of talking about future; Vocabulary study: science and technology
  • 8. Modals and semi-modals: Can, could, be able and be allowed to; Vocabulary study: Travel
  • 9. Modals and semi-modals: May and might / Must and have (got) to / Will, would and used to; Vocabulary study: idioms (journalism and advertising)
  • 10. Modals and semi-modals: Need(n’t), don’t need to and don’t have to / Should, ought to and had better
  • 11. Linking verbs and Wh-questions; Vocabulary study: The environment
