- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is to present a variety of translation theories and their application. The students will be acquainted with the basic concepts and methods of translation, from determining the strategy to editing. They become aware of the multidisciplinary character of translation studies, and both linguistic and cultural differences between English and Czech. All theoretical information will be demonstrated upon text analysis. The course is providing the students with theoretical and methodological basis for their translation work.
- Learning outcomes
- After completing the course, the student will be able to:
-identify and describe the main current theories and methods of translation

Unit 3: Translation theories before the twentieth century
Unit 4: Modern translation theories
Unit 5: Translation Analysis Project Assignment
Unit 6: Meaning 1: literal and connotative
Unit 7: Meaning 2: collocative, allusive and pragmatic meaning
Unit 8: Lexical Equivalence: generalization, specification, borrowing, calque, literal translation, transposition, adaptation
Unit 9: Grammatical Equivalence: noun ? countability, case, gender, pronouns, determination (articles), verb forms, voice
Unit 10: Textual Equivalence: intertextuality, intersententiality, cohesion, coherence, text function
Unit 11: A Brief Guide to Proofreading
