Course objectives
The course follows Writing Skills cource, which discusses the basic skills of writing in English. The subject Academic Writing systematically develops these skills and focuses on the specifics of English written professional texts. An important part of the course is the joint presentation and evaluation of students' written speeches. The course is also designed as a preparation for the elaboration of a bachelor's thesis, therefore attention will be paid to writing the abstract, introduction and conclusion, formulation of hypotheses. Attention is also paid to the revision of the text and the oral presentation of research results.

Syllabus
  • 1. Primary and secondary sources: Quotes and paraphrases. Citation standard.
  • 2. Information sources.
  • 3. Types of academic texts and their specifics.
  • 4. Academic text: basic requirements.
  • 5. Selection and formulation of the topic, syllabus.
  • 6. Writing and rewriting, how to present ideas (writing as a process, writing the first version and other versions).
  • 7. Text structure: annotation, abstract of bachelor thesis.
  • 8. Text structure: introduction, conclusion of the essay and bachelor thesis.
  • 9. Text structure: paragraph, so-called topic sentence, paragraph structure; cohesion and coherence, conjunctions and phrases.
  • 10. Text revision.
  • 11. Presentation of ideas and arguments, choice of words, work with sources of information, length of text.
  • 12. Presentation of results, defense of the final thesis.
  • 13. Group evaluation of assigned tasks.
