Course objectives
The Italian 3 course is intended primarily for students of the English and German programs, who can thus supplement their language skills. They will continue to work with an Italian textbook, which includes both listening and conversation topics and useful grammar with a number of exercises of various types. Language teaching will be complemented by reading texts and working with them; these texts acquaint students with the basics of Italian studies.
Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to master the language at the A1-A2 level.
Syllabus

1.     Lesson 11A – Quest'anno ho trascorso le vacanze...: The present perfect (passato prossimo) with the auxiliary verb avere, regular and irregular past participles, conjugation of the verb tradurre.


2.     Lesson 11B/C – Il primo giorno a Roma: Finding your way around the city, travelling, facts about Rome and its landmarks (Roma, Il Colosseo, Il Foro romano, Il Campidoglio, L'Altare della Patria).


3.     Lesson 12A/1 – Dove sei andata per il fine-settimana?: The present perfect (passato prossimo) with the auxiliary verb essere, agreement of the past participle with the subject, past tense of reflexive verbs, verbs venire, salire, scegliere.


4.     Lesson 12A/2 – I signori Gandini sono in casa?: Agreement of the past participle with the direct object (lo, la, li, le, ne), special forms of the adjective bello.


5.     Lesson 12B/C – Andiamo al cinema: Italian cinema, culture and entertainment, supplementary reading Cinema in poltrona, comparison of the use of essere and avere in the passato prossimo.


6.     Lesson 13A/1 – L'Italia in numeri: Cardinal numbers from 30 to 1,000,000, fractions, percentages, basic mathematical operations, weights and measures, decimal numbers.


7.     Revision – Revisione: course revision, intensive review of the past tenses (Lessons 11–12), past participle agreement and vocabulary.


8.     Lesson 13A/2 & B/C – The pronominal particle ne: Expressing quantity using the pronominal particle ne, the reflexive verb andarsene, texts Autostop, Le elezioni, Totocalcio, and facts about migration in Italy.


9.     Lesson 14A – Oggi è un giorno importante per me: The future tense (futuro) of regular and irregular verbs, expressing uncertainty or assumptions about the present.


10.  Lesson 14B/C – Dove andiamo in vacanza quest'anno?: Talking about the weather (Che tempo farà?), conversations about holiday planning, writing postcards (Scriviamo dalle vacanze le cartoline).


11.  Lesson 15A – Domani è Natale: Position of two personal pronouns before the verb (me lo, te la, glieli, etc.), the pronominal particle ci, irregular verb togliere.


12.  Lesson 15B/C – Il Natale in Italia: Italian Christmas customs and traditions (panettone, il presepe, i regali, la Befana), preparation for the test.


13.  Test: Comprehensive test covering Lessons 11–15.
