Course objectives
The course is focused on systematically developing skills in writing various forms in English, such as essays, literary essays, and final papers. It covers the basic skills associated with written expression, as well as the specifics of academic texts written in English. The aim is, among other things, to teach students to manage working with extensive sets of information and to process them creatively and correctly in written form. Attention is also given to text revision and the oral presentation of research results.
Syllabus
  • 1. Authorship and plagiarism, how to avoid plagiarism. 2. Sources of information and work with them (various sources of information, their reliability, data collection and comments). 3. Critical thinking, reading and writing. How to avoid common typing mistakes. 4. Types of texts (essay, argumentative essay, literary essay, presentation, bachelor's and diploma thesis). 5. Social factors in writing (target group, question of formality of the text, spoken and written text). 6. We start writing: how to choose a topic (the so-called thesis statement, thesis outline, title). 7. Writing and rewriting, how to present ideas (writing as a process, writing the first version and other versions). 8. Essay structure (general advice; introduction, article and conclusion), how to write a conclusion and annotation of a bachelor's/diploma thesis. 9. How to logically build and organize a text well (paragraph, so-called topic sentence, paragraph structure; cohesion and coherence, connecting expressions and phrases). 10. How to organize the text well - continued (consistent approach to the text, what else to pay attention to when writing). 11. Revision of the text, proofreading and final editing (general questions about the text, presentation of ideas and arguments, choice of words, work with sources of information, length of the text). 12. Presentation of research results, defense of the final thesis. 13. Joint evaluation of assigned tasks
