Course objectives
In the course which takes up the course Algebra I, students get basic knowledge about linear algebra necessary for the further study of mathematics.
Learning outcomes
Students will be able to:
- define important concepts of linear algebra
- apply the acquired knowledge on concrete examples.
Syllabus
  • - Vector spaces
    - Vector subspaces
    - Linear maps (kernel and range, isomorphism)
    - Matrix representation of linear maps
    - Polynomials
    - Eigenvalues and eigenvectors
    - Scalar product (Gramm-Schmidt orthogonalization, orthogonal complement, the norm induced by a scalar product)
    - Bilinear and quadratic forms (canonical forms, Sylvester's law of inertia)

Credit: written exams and successful consultation of all topics.
Examination: All students meet the requirements for obtaining the credit in the current academic year before taking the exam. For successful graduation it is necessary to prove at least basic knowledge of the taken subject on the written and the oral parts of the examination.
