Course objectives
This course introduces students to more advanced topics in operating systems. The first part of the semester deals with the administration of the Windows operating system, the second part is about UNIX-type operating systems (Linux, MacOS, Solaris, FreeBSD, etc.). In both parts we focus on compound commands, scripting, managing users, processes, services, devices, networks, and system deployment.
Learning outcomes
Students will be able to:
- manage processes and services in Windows and UNIX operating systems.
- provide advanced configuration of access and security.
- manage devices and networks in both UNIX and Windows operating systems.
- address issues related to the installation, maintenance, and repair of operating systems.
Syllabus
  • 1.-2. Managing Windows in text mode (Command Prompt and Powershell), scripts, complex commands.
  • 3. Objects in Windows. Access control and user management in Windows, policies, templates.
  • 4.-5. Process and service management in Windows, WBEM.
  • 6. Device and network management.
  • 7. Windows deployment - installation, updates, software management.
  • 8. Managing UNIX systems in text mode, scripts, complex commands.
  • 9-10. Managing processes and tasks on UNIX systems.
  • 11. Access control and user management.
  • 12. Device and network management in UNIX systems.
  • 13. Deploying UNIX systems - initialization systems and services, logging, security.
