- Stručná anotace předmětu: Smyslem předmětu je poskytnout posluchačům základní rozhled a orientaci v problematice amerických lingvoreálií, upozornit na základní politické, kulturní a sociální aspekty života v USA s důrazem na to, co je specifické pro Spojené státy. Po absolvování kurzu má být posluchač schopen samostatně se orientovat v oboru amerických studií a v odborné literatuře a sám se v této oblasti dále vzdělávat. Sylabus přednášky: 1. Colonial America - (beginnings of colonization, New England, the South, middle colonies, Seven Years War) 2. American Revolution - (British relation to colonies and their reaction, War of Independence, foundations of the new government) 3. American Expansion - (westward expansion, Indian policy, the myth of the West) 4. Between the Revolution and the Civil War - (political scene after the revolution, antebellum era) 5. Civil War - (history of slavery and abolitionism, civil war) 6. Reconstruction and the Gilded Age - (social situation after the war, industrialisation, American at the end of the 19th century) 7. America from the Beginning of the 20th century to 1939 - (the rise of the USA to the position of superpower, WWI, 20ies, 30ies) 8. A Historical View of the USA at War - the USA at war from Spanish-American war to WW I, WW II 9. A Historical View of the USA at War - Korea, Vietnam, the Gulf War, the war in Iraq 10. Post-war America - development after the war, the 50s, 60s 11. Post-war America - from the 70s till the end of the millennium 12. The position of the USA in the nowadays world Sylabus semináře: 1. The USA and Canada - view of a Czech person, American values, What is an American? 2. Geography of the USA - (the USA on the map, climate, regionalism, national parks) 3. Population of the USA - (population structure in the USA today, multiculturalism, melting pot, salad bowl, pluralism, particularism, separatism, history of immigration) 4. Education in the USA - (system of education, basic features, new trends) 5. Religion - (religious pluralism, Puritanism and Protestant religion, other religions, cults and sects, legal guarantees of religious freedom) 6. American government - (executive, legislative and judicial branches, checks and balances, from a bill to a law, federal, state and local governments) 7. Economy in the USA - (industry and agriculture, governmental involvement, producer-seller-buyer relationship, historical perspective) 8. Mass media - (freedom of press, basic features, newspaper, magazines, television, radio, internet) 9. Culture and arts in the USA, popular culture - (architecture, painting, sculpture, music, film) 10. Canada - outline of the history 11. Canada - geography, population, education 12.
