Course objectives
The course is is a follow-up to the German literature of the 20th century 1, focusing now on the second half of the 20th century and presenting the most important writers and their works in the context of the literary movements such as Stunde Null/Trümmerliteratur, Gruppe 47, Neue Innerlichkeit, and in the social and political context. The aim of the seminars is to deepen the understanding of the presented texts and contexts by focusing on selected German and Austrian writers such as Heinrich Böll, Günter Eich, Paul Celan, Ingeborg Bachmann, Peter Handke and others. Important subjects of the course are also the literature in the former German Democratic Republic (DDR) and the contemporary literature since the early 1990s. Students will simultanously learn to read and interpret texts and to discuss the problems of literary realism and deeper meaning. Audiovisual materials will be used as a support.
