Course objectives
The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the basic optical properties of photographic and film technology, which will lead to an understanding of the principle of image formation on a sensor or film. Emphasis is placed on understanding the principle of operation of AV technology, which includes optical systems.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student will be able to:
- to combine the acquired knowledge from the basic course of optics with the practical theory of construction and operation of photographic and film lenses;
- understand the functions of lenses, their use in film and photography;
- understand the function of other optical elements and systems in film and photography;
Syllabus
  • • Light, photometry and the principle of image recording • Physical properties of optical glasses and surfaces, image perception, lens, mirror, law of reflection and refraction • Fixed focal lengths, zooms, macro, tele-, lenses for technical and experimental photography, filters, adapters, converters • Optical composition of photographic and film lenses, optical systems, materials used and their effect on image quality • Optical defects, image sharpness, depth of field, lens testing (number of teaching weeks   2) • Optical experiments "with glass" (bokeh, filters, depth of field, anamorphic adapters, creative lenses, camera obscura, etc.) (number of teaching weeks   2) • How do cinematographic and photographic lenses differ? (photographic vs. film lenses, structure of properties of film lenses, influence on image quality • Optical experiments in   computer (panoramic photos, HDR, tilt-shift, virtual tours, etc.) (number of teaching weeks   2) • Photographic and film optics are not just lenses (Viewfinders, focusing, exposure meters, projections, projectors and projectors) (number of teaching weeks   2)
