Course objectives
The aim is to practice working with hardware and computer networks, especially hardware diagnostics, error detection, monitoring, network diagnostics.
Students will look at the typical features and technologies of various devices, identifying component information, benchmarking, testing components. We also deal with computer networks, including configuration and security procedures for various network devices.
Learning outcomes
Students will be able to:
- understand the documentation of equipment and hardware components;
- determine parameters of the various devices and components using software tools and in documentation, find benchmark results for processors, graphics cards, etc.;
- compare and evaluate components according to available information;
- test components;
- detect and fix common device problems;
- design configuration and security of various network devices.
Syllabus
  • 1. Basic hardware components: motherboard, processor, memory.
  • 2. Tools for repair and modifications.
  • 3. Commonly available software for basic diagnostics, component testing.
  • 4. Processors: determining parameters of processors, testing, overclocking, underclocking.
  • 5. Memory modules: properties, installation, latency, testing, overclocking.
  • 6. Storage: testing, S.M.A.R.T. technology.
  • 7. Power supply, power management.
  • 8. Computer networks, network equipment.
  • 9. Network diagnostics, packet capture.
  • 10. Servers: Windows Server, Linux Server, installation, administration.

The student performs one of the randomly assigned tasks (finding a particular component according to specified criteria, performing or describing maintenance or repair procedure, evaluating suitability of a particular component for a given purpose, etc.).
Compulsory attendance at seminars min. 75 %.
