- Course objectives
- "Faust" by Johann Wolfgang Goethe is still widely regarded as Germany's most important contribution to the literature of the world - "Wetlliteratur", to use the term introduced by Goethe himself. It is said as well, that it is necessary to know this play, if one wishes to understand Germany. In this special class we shall find access to Goethe's play by the help of a comic strip version of "Faust" which has been drawn and written by Felix Goermann ("Flix") (2010). Goethe's persona Faust, the magician and eternal pursuitor of truth, makes a contract with the devil, Mephisto, in order to finally satisfy his eager and curious longing for 'real life'. In the comic strip version, Faust appears as an eternal university student living in nowadays' city of Berlin, who expects his 'coach' Mephisto to bring him together with his beloved turkish girlfriend "Margarete" within one week. The differences between both texts do seem too wide? Peace. The most important elements of Goethe's play, that is, the devils' contract, the bet in heaven, Gretchen's "question" and the final scene in prison, can be understood easier by using the comic strip as a kind of - slightly ironical - guideline, and in the same line the very basics of Goethe's drama of humanity. Goethe's "Faust" may be borrowed from the German Library in its edition by the publisher Reclam. The excerpts from the comic strip "Faust" by Flix will be presented via Moodle.
