Course objectives
Students will get acquainted with the method of prehistoric and medieval archeology, periodization, chronology and cultural systematics of settlement structures in the Czech lands and related areas. The main development tendencies of individual stages with the characteristics of the material and intangible sphere in terms of social, economic, spiritual and cultural trends will be affected.
Learning outcomes
Orientation in archaeological issues. Knowledge in the range of lectures and basic literature.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction, method of archeology and history, periodization, chronology, literature. 2. Natural environment and its transformation in prehistory and the Middle Ages. 3. Stone Age (Paleolithic and Mesolithic), anthropogenesis of hunting-gathering populations. 4. Stone Age (Neolithic and Eneolithic), agricultural and pastoral population. 5. Bronze Age, metallurgy of non-ferrous metals. 6. Iron Age (Hallstatt and La Tène), Celts. 7. Roman times and migration of peoples, Germans. 8. Period of fortification and ethnogenesis of Slavs (settlement, hillforts, funeral rite). 9. Medieval colonization and villages of the High Middle Ages (homestead, house, plow). 10. Mansions (elites, castles, fortresses, courtyards). 11. Medieval city (urbanization, trade, craft, shift) 12. Spiritual culture (paganism, Christianity, church organizations, sacral architecture).
