Course objectives
The aim of the seminar is to acquaint students with selected cultural concepts reflected in British and American literature and with their subsequent interpretations in the form of film adaptations of literary works. Discussion of selected culturological categories will be based on the comparison of selected film works with their literary models (or with relevant text excerpts), together with a reflection of the cultural-social, artistic and historical conventions influencing conversion of artistic text into its film form.
Learning outcomes
Upon completing the course, students will be able to define the key characteristics of film adaptations of literary works. They will be familiar with notable figures in British and American filmmaking who have focused on film adaptations of significant works of British and American culture. They will be capable of analysing film works, applying fundamental concepts from film and literary theory in this analysis, and using relevant secondary sources.
