Course objectives
The aim of the course is to familiarize the students with the current state of the Czech studies of English and teach them the basic linguistic terminology and literature so that they are well-informed about their field of study and its practical aspects. Contents: 1. Language and communication, Definition of language, Language typology 2. English as a world language, Germanic languages, Accents and standards 3. Linguistics - scientific study of language, Structuralism, The scope of linguistics 4. Grammar, morphology, syntax 5. Phonetics and phonology 6. Word stock, lexicology and lexicography 7. The linguistic sign - semantics and semiotics 8. Obtaining linguistic data - corpus linguistics, Corpus annotation, Types of corpora 9. Language and mind - psycholinguistics, Idiolect, Speech disorders 10. Language and society - sociolinguistics, Sociolect, Dialect 11. Language and logic - pragmalinguistics, Cooperative Principle, Politeness Principle 12. Text linguistics and functional stylistics
