Course objectives
The course introduces students to the basics of physical description of light and its propagation in matter and gives some simple applications of optical phenomena in nature and technology.
Syllabus
  • * Historical review of the view on light, measurement of the speed of light.
    * Geometrical optics: Fermat's principle, the law of reflection and refraction at a dielectric interface, total reflection and prisms decomposition of light by a prism spherical mirrors, refraction at spherical surfaces, lenses. Simple optical systems - the eye, magnifying glass, microscope, telescope.
    * Wave optics: optical range of electromagnetic waves, the properties of plane electromagnetic waves, polarization and its applications, spherical wave behavior of plane electromagnetic waves at the interface of two dielectrics, Fresnel amplitude of the reflected and refracted waves, Brewster's angle, total reflection and the evanescent wave coherence of light two-beam interference - interference of two plane light waves, Young's experiment, interference on a thin layer (soap film, antireflection coating, Newton's glass). Interferometry. Diffraction of Light, Babinet principle, Huygens-Fresnel principle, the scalar theory of diffraction, Fraunhofer diffraction by a slit, on the grid, and a circular aperture. Holography and its applications.
