Course objectives
The course offers an overview of basic linguistic terms and definitions. The language is understood as a system of signs and is described on individual levels: Phonetics, Phonology, Morphology, Syntax, Semantics etc. Each linguistic discipline is introduced. German as a Germanic language will be introduced within the classification of languages. Finally, the most important branches of linguistics will be surveyed.

    11. The most important branches of linguistics in the 20th century
    12. Tendencies in the contemporary German language

Active participation in seminars is expected.
Students are required to prepare a short paper on a given topic and present it in the seminar.
