Course objectives
The aim of the course is to repeat, extend and deepen the acquired knowledge of the grammatical and especially lexical system of the English language in a communicative context; to acquaint students with the language system in its normal use with the application of activation techniques; to acquaint students with ways of creating and enriching vocabulary; to lead students to the conscious and purposeful use of language in communication both in terms of fluency and accuracy.
Learning outcomes
Student will be able to:
apply the achieved knowledge of English in everyday communication
deepen further his/her vocabulary using the basic ways of its enrichement
use English in communication in a conscious and correct way.
Syllabus
  • 1. Nice to meet you - Greetings and introductions. Formal/informal greetings and introductions.
    2. People. Physical appearance. Personalities and character.
    Family, family members and friends. Family relations, family tree.
    Adjectives. Body idioms. Antonyms, Synonyms.
    3. Feelings and emotions. Love and relationships. Birth, marriage, death.
    Difference between -ed and -ing adjectives. Idioms, idiomatic phrases.
    4. Food and eating. Food items, cooking, identifying different kinds of food, recipes.
    Instructions, imperative verbs. Role-play: at the restaurant.
    5. Health and lifestyle. What makes up a healthy lifestyle and how to achieve these goals.
    6. Celebrations and festivals. Bank holidays. Czech traditions and habits.
    7. Transport and traveling. Different types of transportation, pros and cons of each. Transportation problems and discomforts. Traveling and adventure. Holidays. Tips for traveling abroad.
    Asking for directions, giving directions, reading maps. Prepositions of place
    8. Jobs. Types of jobs, ideal job. Describing abilities, skills and qualities, discussing interests.
    9. Hobbies and free-time activities. Sports and games. Culture. Literature. Cinema, film and theatre. Music. Genres of music and musical instruments. Favourite bands and songs. The arts, visual arts of painting and sculpture.
    10. Countries, people, nationalities and languages. National stereotypes.
    11. My town. Historic buildings, monuments and sights.
    12. Hopes and Dreams. Expressing future.
