Course objectives
The course will emphasize specific aspects of film style and narrative form through analysis of films screened or watched as homework, each week. To complement this, film soundtracks will also be analyzed critically. The course will take the form of critical writing analysis in class, concerning, for example, one film, or one section of a film. During the class, a short (approx. 200/300 words) critical appraisal shall be written. Midway through the semester, a more detailed essay will be expected of approx. 1000 words concerning one film or one soundtrack. A second essay will be expected at the end of the semester.
Learning outcomes
fter completing the course, the student will be able to: - understand the relationship between literary and film narration against the background of social and cultural changes - understand the specifics of literary and film depiction of reality - identify the connections between the past and the present mediated by literature and film - appreciate the importance of cultural heritage transmitted through literary and film production - work with literary and film terminology - use Chicago bibliographic standards when writing an academic text - interpret literary and film "text" as a structure of meaning - Improve your skills in writing academic essays - lead a professional controversy in the field of film criticism
