Course objectives
The aim of the course Introduction to Personal Computers I is to learn students basic skills in working with PC (including administration and maintenance) and their integration into computer networks of the Institute of Physics and networking in general. Students will learn about office programs MS Word and Excel (and their equivalents in OpenOffice.org) and some other programs to the extent that enables them to independently develop protocols of practices in the computer laboratory and other written work. Students will try to adapt and work with commonly used Internet browsers and email clients. In order to improve the culture of computer writing the course involves an introduction to typesetting and typography.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student will be able to: - define individual PC components and they detailed description - basic orientation/administration in the Operating System - work with office programs MS Word, MS Excel and their alternatives
Syllabus
  • A brief overview of the history of computing: the historical stages, generations of computers, research and production, current development.
    Working under Windows 8/7/XP: Basics of Windows, basic networking: network logon, changing user passwords, mapping and using network drives.
    Working with programs for managing files, folders and computers (Windows Explorer, Total Commander, WinZip, WinRAR, 7-Zip, Dropbox, Unison, CCleaner), their properties and internal commands. Basic user maintenance and settings. Names of files and folders. Localization of systems and programs.
    Working with Microsoft Office: Microsoft Word and its use, creation of text documents. Microsoft Excel spreadsheet and its use, document creation in Excel, graphing. The integration of Microsoft Office via OLE technology, data sharing. Microsoft Outlook. The OpenOffice.org Office Suite and its equivalents for Word (Writer) and Excel (Calc).
    Typesetting, fonts, typography: content vs. form = author vs. typographer, basic typesetting rules, typographic treatment, fonts, their basic classification and use. Design of printed matter, or less is always more. Web design. The mention of typographical system LaTeX.
    Work on the Internet: Internet Explorer, Opera, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Microsoft Outlook Express (Microsoft Mail), connection settings, settings of the software, accessories.
    Drawing graphs: portable program gnuplot and its use in processing protocols for practical exercises.

Teacher's information
Attendance at seminars at least 80%. Preparation and submission of apractical exercises that will be created directly in the classroom. Successful completion of the test (content and success criteria will be specified in the exercises). Submission of final project consisting of two tasks: Word and Excel. Both tasks must be submitted and approved to obtain the credit.
