Course objectives
Students will be familiar with the physical properties of the atmosphere, anthropogenic influence on atmospheric modeling, air pollution, air quality assessment, the effects of air pollution on human health, ecosystems and materials and methods of protection of the atmosphere and air.
Syllabus
  • Basic information about the atmosphere. The composition and vertical structure of the atmosphere. Solar and longwave radiation. Sources of pollutants in the atmosphere. Transport of substances across atmosphere, sinks and outputs.
    Air pollution. Physical, chemical and biological factors that affect air quality. Characteristics of air pollutants. Outdoor and indoor environments.
    Atmospheric deposition. Physical, chemical and meteorological processes that lead to atmospheric deposition. The deposition processes (wet and dry deposition). Atmospheric deposition in local and regional scale. Atmospheric deposition in the Czech Republic.
    Air pollution modeling. Mathematical models of air pollution. Modeling of atmospheric deposition of acidifying components.
    Modelling the deposition flux of ozone. Measurements of ozone. Use the resistance analogy for modeling the deposition rates of ground-level ozone. Measurements of ozone deposition flux with gradient and eddy covariance method. Multiplicative deposition model. Stomatal flux of ozone. Modelling the deposition flux of ozone.
    Air quality assessment. The role of monitoring in air quality management. Air pollution monitoring and network monitoring. The limits of air pollution (emissions, pollution, deposition limits).
    Effects of air pollution. Effects of air pollutants on human health, ecosystems and materials. Exposure, critical levels and loads. Acidification and eutrophication of ecosystems. Natural and anthropogenic climate change. Disruption of the stratospheric ozone layer. Anthropogenic affecting ambient concentrations of ground-level ozone.
    Protection of atmosphere and climate. The origin of the emission. Dust and gases. Legal protection of the atmosphere and air. Main activities and international conventions on the protection of the atmosphere and air.
