Course objectives
The aim of the subject is to unify the students' experiences with operating systems and to extend to the level of knowledge and skills focusing on Windows and Linux systems in the most used versions. Students get acquainted with advanced graphics administration, text-based administration basics, and other techniques related to installation, maintenance and repair of systems.
Learning outcomes
Students will be able to:
- create a structured text document with automated text such as a table of content, index, list of tables and figures, references and cross-references;
- Process a spreadsheet document that contains formulas, graphs, and basic functions;
- understand the function and structure of the database and work with the database;
Syllabus
  • 1. Using MS Windows - file system, version, and editions.
    2. Windows Management in GUI - information retrieval, hardware and performance, security, user management, services, network management.
    3. Windows Registry - registry files, registry access, backup, and registry keys contents.
    4. Command line - help, directory and file handling, search, routing, variables.
    5. About operating systems - the most used licenses, UNIX, and UNIX-like systems.
    6. Using Linux - Linux distributions, the basics of Linux control in GUI.
    7. Properties of UNIX systems - file system, users, processes, files, devices, access permissions, and file properties.
    8. Text mode in Linux - introduction to using a text shell in Linux. Getting help, directories and files, routing, variables, aliases.
    9. Introduction to operating system security - automatic system and application updates, common forms of attacks and defense against them.

The course can also be completed outside the examination period.
Teacher's information
Graduates of this course should understand Windows, and Linux, and manage tasks related to the installation, maintenance and basic repairs or modifications. Tools in the graphical environment of the system and the basics of working in text mode (Command Prompt in Windows, Linux BASH shell).
To pass the course you need to satisfy two tests (one for Windows, one for Linux), each at least 50%.
