Prerequisites
Knowledge of the elements of mathematics, mechanics and electromagnetism is a prerequisite. However, the necessary knowledge can be supplemented during the course.

Course objectives
The course acquaints students with the fundamentals of the physical description of light and its propagation in the material environment and introduces some simple applications of optical phenomena in nature and technology.
Learning outcomes
Students will know the fundamentals of this branch of physics and they will be able to solve basic types of theoretical and practical problems.
Syllabus
  • • Historical development of opinions about light, nature of light, measuring the speed of light. Photometry. (  number of teaching weeks: 2)
  • • Geometric optics: Fermat's principle, the law of reflection and refraction at a dielectric interface; total reflection and reflecting prisms; decomposition of light by a prism; spherical mirrors; refraction on a spherical surface, lenses. Simple optical systems - eye, magnifiers, microscopes, telescopes. Optical phenomena in the atmosphere. Aberration theory. (  number of teaching weeks: 3)
  • • Wave optics: optical domain of electromagnetic waves, properties of plane electromagnetic waves, polarization of light and its use, spherical waves; behavior of plane electromagnetic waves at the interface of two dielectrics, Fresnel amplitudes of reflected and refracted waves, Brewster angle, total reflection and evanescent wave; coherence of light; two-beam interference - interference of two plane light waves, Young's experiment, interference on a thin layer (soap film, antireflection layer, Newton's glasses). Interferometers. Diffraction of light, Babinet principle, Huygens-Fresnel principle, scalar theory of diffraction; Fraunhofer diffraction on a slit, on a grating and on a circular hole. Holography and its use. Limit of geometric optics, eikonal equation, beam equation. (  number of teaching weeks: 4)
  • • Propagation of light in anisotropic materials: Fresnel ellipsoid, surface of phase velocities, surface of refractive indices, birefringence, optical index axis, polarization of waves in anisotropic materials, surface of beam velocities, optical beam axis; uniaxial crystals. (  number of teaching weeks: 4)

Assessment methods
• Active participation in exercises and solving all homework are mandatory. In the oral exam, students demonstrate knowledge and overview of the field of optics in the scope of lectures.
• The exam will have a written and an oral part.
• In order to successfully pass the exam, it is necessary to demonstrate basic knowledge of the theory.
