Course objectives
The main objective of the subject is to help students gain basic knowledge and develop skills in performing nursing interventions. The subject comprises both theoretical instruction and practical training. On completion of the course, the student is able to perform a set of nursing interventions in accord with latest evidence and in compliance with lege artis. It assists students in acquiring basic manual skills and routine in safe and high-quality performance of nursing procedures and interventions for patients/clients.

Syllabus
  • 1. Organisational structure of a hospital, units and departments, competences of nurses and other non-medical health professionals, organisation of nursing work in a ward.
    2. Bed-making, bed accessories.
    3. Examination positions, therapeutic positioning. Handling the patient, promoting mobility, assessing patient´s independence.
    4. Prevention of nosocomial infections, barrier precautions in nursing.
    5. Disinfection, sterilization.
    6. Nursing procedures in hygienic care of an adult patient.
    7. Nursing care of a patient with pressure ulcers.
    8. Nursing procedures in feeding and nutrition. Tube feeding Parenteral nutrition. Handling percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy.
    9. Nursing procedures in bowel movement and urination in adults.
    10. Nursing procedures in vital sign monitoring.
    11. Nursing procedures in the administration of medication - theoretical introduction.
    12. Nursing procedures in per oral administration of medication.
    13. Nursing procedures in administration of medication into the respiratory system. Oxygen therapy. Hyperbaric oxygen.
    14. Nursing procedures in topical application of medication.
    15. Nursing procedures in parenteral administration of medication (injections i.d., s.c. i.m.). Duties of the nurse in opioid handling.
    16. Nursing procedures in parenteral administration of medication (insulin therapy, heparin preparations).
    17. Nursing procedures in parenteral administration of medication (injections i.v., peripheral venous catheter).
    18. Nursing procedures in infusion therapy, administration of parenteral nutrition.
    19. Nursing procedures in transfusion.
    20. Selected nursing procedures in the surgical department (types of bandages and dressings, surgical instruments, bandaging procedures, re-dressing/changing wounds).
    21. Nursing procedures in ostomy patients.
    22. Nursing procedures in biological specimen taking - blood (capillary, venous).
    23. Nursing procedures in biological specimen taking - urine, stools, sputum, smears, swabs.
    24. Nursing procedures in patients suffering from pain.

Teacher's information
Contact hours are based on consultation of selected topics. Non-contact hours are realized via an e-learning environment available at http://elearning.fvp.slu.cz/. At the website, students can use learning materials with on-line assignments. Credits are granted upon successful completion based on a written or oral assessment where the student demonstrates knowledge of compulsory and recommended literature and discusses their on-line assignments. The student can consult the mentor concerning independently studied topics, be it in person, in group sessions or via e-mail.
Requirements for credit:
90 % participation in practicals (students who could not meet attendance criteria due to serious obstacles will be given extra assignments by the tutor). Compliance with the rules for specialist classrooms. Passing the theoretico-practical part of the credit procedure (for students who do not have a valid licence/registration as nurses).
Requirements for examination: Written test, a minimum of 80 % correct answers.
