Course objectives
The course objective is to provide students with the knowledge necessary to study vocational courses. The Chemistry course teaches to understand dental materials and other substances used in dentistry, dental hygiene and nutritional counselling. The curriculum allows for organizing one’s knowledge of general, inorganic and organic chemistry, and biochemistry, generalizing it and using it to study specialist courses.
Learning outcomes
Professional Knowledge: Students have knowledge of dental materials and other substances used in dentistry and dental hygiene.
Professional Skills: Students can define the knowledge of general, inorganic and organic chemistry.
General Qualification: Students can synthesize knowledge about the composition, structure and metabolism of glycides, proteins and lipids.
Competences: Students have accurate and permanent concrete ideas about the construction and properties of chemical compounds important in dental hygiene and dentistry. They can apply knowledge about mixtures, kinds of solutions and their composition, about principles of acid-base balance. They know the importance of biogenic elements and natural substances for humans and they can apply this knowledge to be used in nutrition counselling. They can use the knowledge about the composition, structure and metabolism of glycides, proteins and lipids and about the metabolism of carbohydrates, lipids and proteins in other professional courses, as well as in nutrition counselling. They understand the effect of chemicals on the body. They can apply acquired knowledge in other specialized subjects. They have the ability to gather and work with information, to follow new findings and trends in the field. They understand the need for lifelong learning and working with professional documentation
Syllabus
  • 1. General chemistry The concept of matter (substance, field). Mixtures, solutions, pure substances. The molecular structure of substances. Periodic system of elements. Chemical bond. Solutions, dispersion systems. Reconstitution. Solutions and their categorization. Expressing concentration of solutions. Chemical process. Rate of chemical reactions. Catalytic converters. Photosynthesis. Oxidoreductions. Protolytic reactions. Diffusion, osmosis, osmotic pressure. Dissociation, ionization.
  • 2. Basic inorganic compounds Oxides, acids, alkalis, salts. Important elements and compounds for humans in terms of dentistry, namely: water, hydrogen peroxide, halogens - especially fluorine, nitrogen, phosphorus, arsenic, phosphates, carbon, sulphur, carbonates, buffering systems, metals, alloys used in dentistry, amalgams, alkaline metals, alcalic earth metals, gypsum, mineralization, remineralization, demineralization. Ceramic materials. Biogenic elements, their sources, deficiency and excess. Trace elements, their sources, deficiency and excess. Latin terminology, medical chemical terminology.
  • 3. Organic chemistry Hydrocarbons. Hydrocarbon derivatives (alcohols, ethers, aldehydes, ketones, quinones, carboxyl acids, salts, esters, halogenated derivatives, thioderivatives, amides, nitriles). Heterocyclic compound. Breakdown by heteroatoms and cycle frequency. Purine and pyrimidine principles. Plastics in dentistry, dental plastics processing Drugs - an overview of major drugs in dentistry.
  • 4. Naturally occurring substances. Lipids, simple and compound. Glycerides - the composition, structure and properties. Waxes, compound lipids. Isoprenoids. Terpenes. Steroids. Alkaloids. Carbohydrates, categorization, importance in dentistry and in rational nutrition. Monosaccharides, functional groups, reactions of functional groups, hemiacetal bond. Acetal bond. Disaccharides. Other glycosides. Oligosaccharide. Polysaccharides.

Credit requirements: 80% attendance at the seminars (students who could not attend compulsory instruction for serious reasons will be assigned an alternative way of fulfilling their study requirements).
