Course objectives
Course Annotation: The course is designed as a theoretical one. It allows students to acquire knowledge about genetic information and methods of assisted reproduction, the prevention of birth defects, an understanding of basic principles of genetics and principles of inheritance at the molecular, cellular and organism levels, with particular emphasis on human genetics. The course includes basic sets of genetic defects, genetic screening methods and evaluation of genetic risks, including genetic counselling. Introduces students to problems associated with the early development of the human embryo and problems common to embryology and obstetrics. Having completed the seminars, students will have knowledge of course topics in order to create a theoretical basis for continuing their training in practically oriented courses.
Learning outcomes
Professional Knowledge: Students can describe and explain the basic principles of genetics and heredity. They can solve model problems with regard to the specifics of various methods of gene expression.
Professional Skills: Students are prepared to use their knowledge in expanding vocational courses focused on clinical practice in relation to inheritance and genetically conditioned diseases.
General Qualification: Students understand the principles of inheritance at the level of molecules, cells and organisms.
Competencies: They can mediate the necessary information to individuals, families, groups, and their relatives in an appropriate form in terms of their competence and ensure that this information is understandable and that the results achieved in the awareness of clients / patients can be evaluated.

  • 1. Molecular biology and molecular genetics.
  • 2. Nucleic acids and proteins - replication, transcription, translation. Regulation of gene expression.
  • 3. Mutations and their consequences. Cell reproduction - mitosis and meiosis.
  • 4. Meiosis and gamete maturation.
  • 5. General genetics - basic concepts.
  • 6. Mendel's laws. Binding genes, heredity, and gender.
  • 7. Human genetics. Development of the human embryo
  • 8. Observational research methods of human genetics. Genetic counselling and genetic prediction.
  • 9. Genetically conditioned disorders. Gene therapy, genetic engineering and eugenics.
  • 10. Genetic methods of assisted reproduction.

Assessment methods
Fulfilment of 80% instruction attendance (students who cannot attend compulsory instruction for serious reasons will be assigned an alternative way of fulfilling their study requirements) and a written exam.
