Course objectives
The aim of the course is to acquaint students with non-governmental organizations and volunteering activities within special pedagogy. Students will become familiar with the issues of non-governmental organizations and voluntary activities, their history and development in the world in and in the Czech Republic. Emphasis is placed on the legislative support in this area. The seminar includes practical training of volunteering in a selected organization with people with special needs.
Learning outcomes
Professional knowledge:
- students know the basic concepts of motor disabilities
- students have basic knowledge of legislative documents (NGOs and volunteering)
- students know the possibilities of volunteering programmes and projects
Professional skills:
- students master strategies of working with volunteers (recruitment and selection of volunteers, motivation)
- students master strategies of working with volunteers (training, supervision)
- students have practical skills in evaluation of volunteering or a volunteer programme
General qualification:
- students can use theoretical knowledge of persons with special needs
- Students can independently coordinate a volunteer project

  • 1. Basic characteristics of NGOs.
  • 2. Typology of NGOs.
  • 3. Basic terminology of volunteering, the definition of volunteering.
  • 4. Types and characteristics of volunteering.
  • 5. The Universal Declaration on Volunteering
  • 6. History and current state of volunteering in the Czech Republic, the Coalition of Volunteer Initiatives in the Czech Republic.
  • 7. The Volunteer Service Act and its application.
  • 8. The Social Services and Volunteering Act.
  • 9. Volunteer programmes - meaning, objectives, scope - demonstration of a model.
  • 10. Volunteering for people with special needs.
  • 11. Strategies of working with volunteers – recruitment and selection of volunteers, motivation.

Assessment methods
In order to obtain the credit, the student prepares a presentation of the project proposal for the establishment of a non-profit organization or a project for the creation of a volunteer program, which is sent by the teacher within the given deadline.

The course can also be completed outside the examination period.
Teacher's information
Personal contact in teaching, consulting hours. During continuous study, the student uses the study support and processes selected correspondence tasks. Here he will also demonstrate knowledge of compulsory literature and contact teaching lectures. The student will be able to continuously consult individually studied topics of the subject through e-mail, individual or group consultations.
