Activity in teaching: The student is expected to actively participate in teaching, especially participation in discussions, presentation of the given topic from the given field, work with foreign studies from the given field and the fulfillment of ongoing tasks assigned in the seminar, including professional studies literature. Oral exam: during the exam, the student demonstrates an understanding of the topics, can inductively formulate consistent conclusions, or formulate new hypotheses deductively.

Course objectives
The course provides knowledge in the discipline of sociology of childhood and child. It delineates the social perspective on the issue of education, social functions of education, and on subjects and objects of education from the sociological point of view. It focuses on the social determinants which play key roles in shaping the individual. Furthermore, the course provides theoretical insight into family education, family relationships, family functioning and to problems occurring in the family, as well as in other educational environments.
Learning outcomes
Professional knowledge:
- students are familiar with the basic terminology used in the discipline
- students acquire knowledge of the definition of the discipline of upbringing, education and related disciplines
- students obtain knowledge of sociological approaches to the interpretation of the influence of family background
- students are familiar with societal context in the discipline of education
- students obtain knowledge of psychosocial influences on the development of a child
- students gain knowledge of the functions of family and marriage and of the objectives of family upbringing
Professional skills:
- students can describe relations to the issues of negative phenomena and their influence in the family and at school
- students can describe turning points in life stages of human beings and his socialization
- students can describe the typology of educational environments affecting the development of a child
- students will obtain knowledge of socialization of pupils in the school environment, enumeration of school functions
General qualification:
- students acquire the skills to write conspecti of expert sources from specified thematically linked literature
Syllabus
  • 1. Life cycle, stages of life in a sociological perspective (childhood, youth, adulthood, old age). The individual and his life path. 2. Social context of childhood (description of social situation). Theoretical foundations of the sociology of childhood. Childhood as a social phenomenon. Forms of childhood. Childhood as a social entity. 3. Childhood and, factors shaping the child's personality (family, school, peer group, free time). Growing into a world of two genders. Effects of social isolation. Gender roles. 4. Social togetherness. Social group (definition, characteristics, species). 5. Basic social institution: School as a social organism. School as a socializing factor, selected problems of sociology's perspective on this institution. Leisure organizations. 6. Sociology of education and school. Delimitation. Development of sociological approaches. Society-wide contexts of upbringing and education. 7. Youth as a specific social group (sociological understanding of youth, its structure, generations, problem groups). Youth and the system of heterosexual relationships (sexual behavior, love, choosing a partner and starting one's own family). Value orientation of youth. 8. Current youth problems (youth unemployment, study of marginal youth groups). Prejudice and discrimination (racism, sexism, ageism). 9. Social relations (definition, types, 3 components). Social control (formal and informal). 10. Social interaction (definition, types, 3 pages). Social communication (communication act, communication channels, types of social communication, verbal and non-verbal communication, active listening techniques). 11. Children at risk and the system of support, help, and care. Child participation in SPOD. 12. The family as an important factor in the child's socialization. The breakdown of the boundaries of the family system and the effects on children and adolescents. 13. Socialization, types, forms, agents. Neglected socialization. 14. Sociological research. Methods and techniques. Quantitative and qualitative research. Ethical aspects of research.
