Course objectives
The course is designed as both theoretical and practical. The student will acquire basic knowledge of first aid in various health-threatening and health-damaging conditions. The course also includes knowledge of disaster medicine, emergency care, and crisis management (activation of the components of the Integrated Rescue System).

Learning Outcomes


Professional Knowledge: The student is able to describe the causes and symptoms of selected traumatic and non-traumatic health-threatening conditions and explain the principles of first aid. The student is able to define the recommended procedures for CPR and describe the importance of the Integrated Rescue System and crisis management.


Professional Skills: The student is able to effectively provide first aid and CPR in selected traumatic and non-traumatic health-threatening conditions.


General Competence (Competencies): The student is able to assess selected traumatic and non-traumatic health-threatening conditions, determine the priority order for treating injured/affected persons, and subsequently provide appropriate treatment. Upon completion of the course, the student will be familiar with the principles and procedures of first aid and CPR. The student will further develop and improve this knowledge and these skills during subsequent studies and clinical practice.

Syllabus

Overview of Topics Covered in Lectures and Practical Classes:

  1. Importance and provision of first aid, setting priorities, types of first aid, and a standardized approach to providing first aid.
  2. Emergency situations and disaster medicine.
  3. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the practical use of an automated external defibrillator (AED).
  4. Positioning and transportation of patients, bandaging techniques.
  5. Unconsciousness.
  6. First aid for choking and drowning.
  7. Seizures and convulsive conditions.
  8. Bleeding – internal, external, arterial, venous, and mixed bleeding; shock.
  9. Incised, stab, chop, lacerated, and gunshot wounds. Foreign bodies in wounds and body orifices. Animal-related injuries.
  10. Severe injuries – injuries to the head and central nervous system, spine and spinal cord, neck, chest, and abdomen.
  11. Limb injuries, fractures of major bones and joints, pelvic injuries. Crush injuries.
  12. Injuries caused by heat, cold, electricity, and chemicals.
  13. Intoxication and poisoning.
  14. Selected acute conditions in internal medicine.
  15. Selected acute conditions in gynaecology, including precipitous childbirth.
  16. The most common serious acute conditions in paediatrics.

Teaching methods

Assessment methods
Requirements for obtaining course credit: 80% attendance, active participation, and continuous demonstration of theoretical knowledge and practical skills during classes. Students who are unable to attend mandatory classes for serious reasons will be assigned an alternative method of fulfilling the study requirements by the instructor.


Course credit: Oral and practical assessment of professional knowledge and skills.


Examination: Written test with a minimum pass mark of 80%.

Teacher's information

During continuous study, the student uses the study materials and completes selected correspondence assignments. In doing so, the student demonstrates knowledge of the compulsory literature and the content covered during face-to-face lectures. The student will be able to consult individually studied course topics on an ongoing basis via email, MS Teams, and individual or group consultations.

Course credit: Oral and practical assessment of professional knowledge and skills.

Examination: Written test with a minimum pass mark of 80%.
